You know all the songs, signs, plaques etc. that say God is our chain breaker? It’s said so often that we forget that he is currently breaking our chains, not only in the past and future.
When I used to think of this saying, I would picture the chains (my problems, dilemma, struggle, obstacle etc.) suddenly breaking in half. Done with, complete, in one quick and clean-cut. Sometimes it works out that our chains are broken quickly and painlessly, other times it’s a long slow process.
God breaks our chains one link at a time. I personally wish it were faster but, I think as he breaks each link, they turn into links of love. Picture a link in a chain, with it open, it more closely resembles a heart.
This long and slow breaking process, is what builds our love for others, for God and ourselves. As God breaks each link, he comforts us and we can give that comfort to others who may be struggling with the same thing.
John 13:35 (NLT)
” Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
If every single one of our struggles and problems were quickly and easily fixed like we want, we wouldn’t be able to share God’s love and comfort with others because we wouldn’t have received it ourselves. We would be off and running to the next thing to fix or do. The long slow process of breaking each link teaches us how to depend on God and look to him rather than what we are tangled up in.
If our chains were quickly split in half, we would easily get tripped back up and tangled again. Picture a long single chain around you. Broken in half by one link; now there are two pretty long chains dropped at your feet. How easy it would be to take a wrong step and get tripped up.
The long slow process of breaking our habits, addictions, negative thoughts, weight problems, health issues, financial struggles, marriage problems, work issues etc. is long because each step of the way we have to put the work in and learn a new way.
God breaks each link and every chain.
In order to not put those chains back on, we have to look to him, learn from the process and live in love. When the chains are finally broke, we will be surrounded by love and be able to freely give love to others.
Don’t be frustrated with your problems and how long it is going to take to change the situation. Open your heart and mind to allow God to do his work and accept the painful chain breaking process. It IS long and slow, but if you look to God and learn from the experience, your struggle won’t be wasted.
