Pillsbury Gluten Free Yellow Cake Review

20161107_143607

Gluten free products are literally starting to pop up all over my local grocery store, SO I decided to test and try one out to see what it is like. I’ve had many Pillsbury cakes before, so I was really excited to try this box and see how similar it is in taste to their regular mix. I made 1 small cake and 12 cupcakes.

Overall I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

  • Taste: 4.5
  • Texture: 4
  • Moisture: 3.5
  • Appearance: 4

Taste

Overall the mix tasted like a regular cake. I may not have even noticed it was gluten-free if I wouldn’t have made it myself. It has a similar taste to the regular yellow cake mix but it does taste a little less sweet, more like a corn bread mix.

Texture

The texture of the cake was fairly good. It was best after just baking; however after a couple of hours, the cupcakes and cake both were more crumbly.

Moisture

After baking and cooling, the cakes with icing were moist and delicious. BUT after a couple of hours and into the next day, the cupcakes and cake was extremely dry. Towards the end of the cakes left, my husband and I actually only ate the portion that was frosted and threw the rest away, it was actually pretty sad and the biggest down fall of this mix. Cupcakes I normally bake of the regular mix stay nice and moist but this one seemed even more like cornbread.

Appearance

Overall the cupcakes and cake appeared like a normal mix, but they also seemed like they had an artificial tint of yellow to them. After baking, the cake seemed neon yellow, not really sure why.

Will I buy again?

If eating these cakes right away, or baking fresh, I will buy them again; but if making them ahead of time for an event or holiday, beware that they may get rather dry on you.
